How to Create a Custom Map in AOE 3

Age of Empires 3 (AOE 3) is a real-time strategy game for a PC. Each player controls a civilization in the quest for world domination. Instructions

Install the Age of Empires 3 Scenario Editor from the Age of Empires 3 CD-ROM. Open the application when installation is complete.

Open the file menu. Click "New File" to create a new scenario map file. Choose the type, number of players, number of teams and size. Normal-sized maps measure 200-by-200 units, while a large size measures 400-by-400 units.

Open the terrain menu. Click the Paint Terrain option and select a terrain type. Click on blank areas to add to the terrain. Repeat this with additional terrains. Other terrain menu options can provide rivers, cliffs, forests and brush.

Open the objects menu. Click Place Object to select and place an object on the map. The objects can be units, buildings and nature elements like animals and plants.

Open the scenario menu. The scenario menu allows a user to modify and test the aspects of the scenario. Each player's color, civilization, name, resources, team, control, artificial intelligence and home city can be altered through the Player Data option. Objectives define tasks a player must accomplish for rewards. Each objective has starting conditions, finish conditions, awards and number of occurrences. Modify this information as necessary for your scenario design.

Open the File menu and click "Save As" to save the map file. Enter a filename and click "Save."

Open the scenario menu and click "Playtest Scenario" to test the scenario file in game.
