Save the game before entering an important battle in which you are trying to catch the opposing Pokemon. This will ensure that if you do not catch it on your first try, you can simply turn off the game without saving (after the failed attempt) and turn it back on to try again as if the battle never happened.

Reduce the opponent's health down as low as possible without making it faint. This will greatly increase the chance of capturing the Pokemon.

Use a Pokemon to freeze, sleep, burn, poison or paralyze the opponent before you throw your Poke Ball. This will greatly increase your chances of catching the Pokemon.
