Tips for

In 2007, Electronic Arts released "Medal of Honor: Vanguard" as the tenth installment in its series of first-person shooter video games for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii. Like previous games in the "Medal" series, Vanguard featured a number of single-player missions, all set in World War II Europe. The last of these missions, "The Crucible," continues the mission behind enemy lines in a German factory, and requires players to kill encamped soldiers and then fend off waves of attackers.

Weapons and Weapon Upgrades

Players start "The Crucible" mission equipped with an M1 Garand rifle. The Crucible contains an upgrade that will make this weapon more effective in killing German soldiers. To find this upgrade, eliminate all the German soldiers guarding the first tunnel in the factory. Instead of turning right, keep walking straight through into a room with no other entrance or exit. The weapon upgrade (a scope) sits behind a box in this room; players can pick it up and then attach it to the M1 Garand rifle. This attachment will provide the rifle with better accuracy over longer distances. As this level contains a number of snipers, finding this upgrade will help a player shoot them. Once a player picks up the scope, he or she can equip it by pressing the "up" direction button, and can remove the scope by pressing the "down" direction button.

Win the Medals

"Medal of Honor: Vanguard" rewards players with medals for completing various challenges during each mission. In "The Crucible," players can earn two such medals. Players can win the "Weapon Expert" medal by picking up all three of the available weapons in this level. The three weapons in "The Crucible" consist of the M1 Garand, the fully-automatic StG44 machine gun and the M9 Bazooka. Players can acquire the StG44 by killing any German soldiers using it and then picking it up from the ground, and can find the bazooka sitting just behind the exit door of the factory (the first building players enter in this mission). Any player who completes this level without dying can also earn the "Bronze Star" medal.

Know the Territory

"The Crucible" features gun battles in tunnels, in buildings and across open terrain. Enemies will spring up from behind corners and will emerge from basements below and attics above the player. A number of snipers sit in the distance; one camps inside a tower (when first entering the factory). German soldiers perch inside machine gun nests, and will obliterate the player if he or she tries to approach them directly from the front. Reading a walk-through before beginning this level can enhance a player's success in "The Crucible." (See the References section for a link to a complete walk-through of this level.)
