Increase Speed Boosts
When approaching a speed boost on a small ramp and you have a mushroom, use that mushroom just a split second before hitting the ramp. If you time it properly, your speed boost will increase significantly and thus allow you to increase your lead or catch up. Note that this will not work on extremely lengthy jumps where the distance is already predetermined.

Speed Boosts
There are two moments when you can go from complete standstill to top speed: at the start of the race, and when Lakitu picks you up after going off course. At the start of the race, wait just before the final light appears and jam the accelerator. If you time it right, you will get a speed boost. When Lakitu grabs you, wait just before you touch the ground, hit the accelerator and the same will happen. Note that if you do this too soon, you will spin out and lose even more time.
